Tinted lantern slide featuring a map showing mission activity of the Church of Scotland in Calabar, now in eastern Nigeria, illustrating the work of missionary Mary Slessor (1848-1915). The map delineates the homelands of the Ekoi (with whom Slessor worked), Ibibio and Ibo peoples. United Presbyterian Church of Scotland missionary Mary Slessor was a heroine to the missionary community. Raised in a poor family from Aberdeen, she worked as a mill girl in Dundee, educating herself and attending lessons in the mill school. Inspired by the death of David Livingstone in present day Zambia in 1873, Slessor answered a call for missionaries and sailed for Calabar in 1876. Working with and gaining the trust of local tribes and elders, Slessor fought against the practices of abandoning twin babies, sacrifices of village women and poisoning ordeals, as well as acting as a mediator between feuding tribal groups. This slide comes from a set on mission, culture and industry in Calabar, southeast Nigeria generated by the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church of Scotland (which was incorporated with the Church of Scotland in 1929.)
