Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. View 1: View of the French oil tanker "Ventose" in the South China Sea. The tanker was enroute from Indonesia to Japan when it rescued a boat full of Vietnamese refugees, "Boat People", on July 25, 1979.
