Edmund Snow Carpenter was born on September 2, 1922. He was an anthropologist and archaeologist, best known for his work on tribal art and visual media. Carpenter did groundbreaking work in anthropological film making and ethnomusicology and, with colleague Marshall McLuhan, laid the foundations of modern media studies. He died on July 1, 2011.; San Fernando Valley State College is now California State University, Northridge.
