Description
William H. Pepper moved to Sonoma County in 1858 after his lumber mill in Yuba County, Calif., burned down. He purchased 157 acres of a squatter's claim and established a nursery 6 miles west of Petaluma. He purchased another 98 acres which included what is now the intersection of Pepper Road and Pepper Lane. After a trip to Germany, where he learned about Dr. Federic Froebel's "Children Garden" or kindergarten, he built the Pepper Free Kindergarten at the southwest corner of Liberty and Washington Streets, which opened on December 4, 1894, with 28 students.
