Description
View from the east of Observatory Peak. A steep series of boards lead up the hill to the dormitory. Behind the dormitory, the twin domes of the main building are visible. The great dome stands at the south end, while the smaller dome is at the north. Houses are situated below the summit. Construction of the Lick Observatory began in 1880. The original plans included the construction of two domes. The dome depicted here is the small dome, which was completed in 1881 and a 12-inch refractor telescope was installed. The second dome, also known as the "Great Dome" was completed in 1886 and housed a 36-inch refractor telescope, also called the "Great Refractor."
