The Bal Masque was an annual event held at the Beverly Hills Hotel to benefit St. John's Hospital located in nearby Santa Monica, California. Odell McConnell was a Los Angeles lawyer for more than 60 years; Fred de Cordova was an American television and film producer, best known for his work on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson; Peter Paanakker was a Los Angeles businessman and philanthropist; Conrad "Nicky" Hilton Jr. was an American socialite, businessman and hotel heir; Paul Hesse was a well-known celebrity glamor photographer in Hollywood and New York; Sir Charles Mendl was a British diplomat and actor; Reginald Gardiner was a British actor with supporting roles in many Hollywood films. Photograph caption dated January 28, 1950 reads "Judges in chambers select winners of Bal-Mask (sic) ball, l. to r. O'dell McConnell, Frederick Cordova, Peter Panakker (sic), Conrad Hilton, Jr., Paul Hesse, Sir Charles Mendl. Looking on in back is Reginald Gardner (sic)." The men are standing in a semi-circle and, except Gardner, are wearing English barrister-style white wigs and judges robes with bow ties, holding large cards and long pencils.
