Full-length portrait of four armed soldiers posing in front of a destroyed building in Perquín. The soldiers are wearing a uniform and holding M-16 assault rifles of U.S. origin. Prior to their arrival, the town had been occupied by the guerrillas for several months. The town had been held by guerrillas just few days before. The guerrillas occupied the town of Perquín on October 1982 but in the first couple of weeks of February 1983, Colonel Miguel Antonio Méndez and the Ramón Belloso Battalion recaptured it. The guerrillas assaulted the Batallion's command post in Perquín on February 23 forcing them to retreat from Perquín. The Ramón Belloso Battalion was formed in 1982 and trained by the United States at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. It was one of the most aggressive military units during the Civil War and was nicknamed the "Gringo Batallion."
