Description
This cemetery was known as the Campo Santo and was first consecrated in 1778 and then again on January 29, 1939 by Los Angeles Archbishop John Cantwell. It served as the final resting place for some 6,000 "neophytes". A small stone marker (not seen here) denotes the gravesite of Jose´ de Los Santos, the last native to be buried on the grounds at the age of 101 in February 1921. Also interred at the Mission are the bodies of numerous Franciscan Fathers who died during their time of service, as well as the remains of Reverend Raymond Catalan, C.M.F., who undertook the restoration of the Mission's gardens. Mission San Gabriel Arcangel, also known as the San Gabriel Mission, is a former Roman Catholic mission and current historic landmark; it was the fourth of 21 California missions to be founded. The mission was designed by Father Antonio Cruzado, and was built from 1791 to 1805 out of cut stone, brick, and mortar. Mission San Gabriel Arcangel, often referred to as the "Godmother of the Pueblo of Los Angeles", was added in 1971 as a National Historic Landmark, building #71000158. It is also a California Historical Landmark, No. 158. Two addresses are given for the mission: 428 South Mission Drive, and 537 West Mission Drive at Junipero Street.
Early view of the cemetery located on the grounds of Mission San Gabriel Arcangel. The visible crosses are few and far between, and the Mission can barely be seen way back in the distance.
