Bill Pollard is Chairman of the Board of the ServiceMaster Foundation and serves as a director of Herman Miller, Inc. In addition, he also serves as a trustee and/or director for several educational, religious and non-profit organizations such as, Wheaton College, and The Drucker Foundation. He is also involved in teaching and speaking on subjects such as, management, ethics and integrating one’s faith with their work, which he discusses in this interview along with his relationship with Peter Drucker. Pollard begins the interview by explaining how he first experienced Drucker through his books and later met him in person at a retreat for Herman Miller, Inc. He explains how Drucker helped him better understand the cultural nuances of Japanese business. He then discusses The ServiceMaster Company and how it is “a people business.” From there he goes on to relate how Drucker’s advice and consulting work affected ServiceMaster. Pollard also explains how Drucker has influenced him and the way he balances and views his priorities in life. In the second half of the interview Pollard discusses both his and Drucker’s views on religion and ethics in business. He goes on to examine Drucker’s work with non-profit organizations and finishes the interview by explaining that he believes Drucker will be remembered for his humility.
