Description
Pictured in April 1954 is the American Trust Company’s 100th anniversary gala, held at the bank’s 1011 10th St. location. Standing before the celebratory cake – topped with 100 candles – are, left to right, H. Stephen Chase, vice president and manager; Charles Deterding, county executive; and Bartley Cavanaugh, Sacramento city manager. The bank was founded in 1854 in San Francisco as the Accumulating Fund Association, making it California’s first incorporated bank. It acquired American Trust Company as a title in 1927, resulting from a merger with American Trust and the Mercantile Trust Company of California.
