Description
This circa 1960 photograph shows a side entrance to the Hong King Lum Cafe at 901 through 903 Third Street and the King Yuen Cafe at 905 Third Street. The western-most end of the Southern Pacific Railroad depot is visible at the left.
The Hong King Lum Cafe opened in August of 1930 under the ownership of Dong Haw. Built from an investment of $75,000, the restaurant occupied the second floor of the building with five shops occupying the ground floor. It became a popular restaurant and banquet facility in both the Chinese-American and broader Sacramento communities. Restaurateur Frank Fat got his start waiting tables in the Hong King Lum Cafe.
The Sacramento Redevelopment Agency destroyed this building as part of a midcentury "urban renewal" program.
