Description
Rear view of the Winchester Mystery House. In the foreground is a grape arbor. Mrs. Sarah Winchester purchased a small 8-room farmhouse here in 1884 and commenced a series of additions and building projects that did not cease until the 1906 earthquake. Her efforts left a sprawling 160-room mansion. After her death the new owner renamed the mansion "The Winchester Mystery House" and developed it as a tourist attraction.
