3 images. Accidental drowning at Playa del Ray, 6 April 1958. Gilbert Hoffman (father of victim) Body of Donald Hoffman -- 4 1/2 years Frankie Vanerwal (Miss) Sargeant Lloyd Neil underwater team. Caption slip reads: "Photographer: Sandusky. Date: 1958-04-06. Assignment: Drowning, Playa del Ray. 16: L.A. County Underwater Recovery team (three divers in suits in ofreground) lift body of Donald Hoffman, 4 1/2, from water. At left is L.A. county lifeguard Lieutenant Don St. Hill, who commands Underwater Recovery Team center, helping St. Hill is Guard Micky O'Brien who first contacted body at right, Guard John Kunkle. Two at rear are unidentified volunteers. 17: Gilbert Hoffman (center of neg., leaning over, balding head) identifies body of 4 1/2 year old son Donald after County Underwater Recovery Team found body in four feet of water. Woman at left of Hoffman is neighbor, Miss Frankie Vanderwal. Detective in felt hat lifting blanket at left is Jack Colburn. 24: Gilbert Hoffman collapses in arms of Frankie Vanderwal and Sgt. Lloyd Neil of Venice Division. Persons in d23/24/25/26 other than Hoffman, Miss Vanderwal, and Sgt. Neil (who is in uniform) are unidentified".
