Description
Pictured in 1926, at Sixteenth Avenue and Freeport Boulevard, is William Land Park’s World War One Veteran’s Memorial. The 2,000 dollar monument was donated by the Women’s Council of Sacramento County and reads as follows: “Dedicated To Those From Sacramento County Who Served Their Country In The World War 1914-1918 And To The Memory Of Those Who ‘Gave The Last Full Measure of Devotion.’…” Perched above the eight foot base, the bronze eagle protecting its nest is meant to symbolize the nation’s veterans safeguarding their own. The memorial also lists the names of those Sacramento County residents who died in the First World War, including Lillian Todhunter, the woman in the United States Navy to die in service to her country. In 1917, she succumbed to pneumonia at Mare Island Naval Station. The marker was dedicated on Armistice Day 1926.
