Photograph of the painting "Penitence" by Peel, depicting naked children gathered around a dressing screen, [s.d.]. A naked child stands at center with her face in one hand and her dress in the other. Behind her, two other children who appear at least partially dressed peer over the dressing screen that separates them from the girl. Shoes and other dressing room ephemera can be seen littering the left side of the painting. Painted 1891. The artist, Paul Peel, was born in Ontario on November 7th, 1860.
