Description
On the left Norman O. Houston (1893-1981), a prominent insurance executive, receives the Award of Merit and Honorary Fellowship of the George Washington Carver Memorial Institute for outstanding contributions to the arts, humanities and better race relations. Dr. Rufus B. Von KleinSmid (right), USC chancellor, makes the presentation. Norman Houston is considered a pioneer of African American enterprise, having co-founded Golden State Insurance with William Nickerson. Photograph dated March 24, 1958.
