Description
Monterey Parlor, Native Sons of the Golden West, present to J. Harvey McCarthy, founder of Carthay Center, a section of the original Monterey customs house flagpole, which flew successively flags of Spain, Mexico and the United States and which bears the proud distinction of having flown the first American flag ever raised in California. Left to right: John T. Regan of San Francisco, grand secretary; Herman O. Lichtenberger of Los Angeles, past grand president; Charles A. Thompson, grand president who made the presentation; Mr. McCarthy; Charles L. Dodge of Martinez, grand second vice president; John T. Newell of Los Angeles, grand third vice president; kneeling, Sydney B. Witkowski of Los Angeles, deputy grand president. The relic has been placed in the Carthay Circle Theatre art galleries for permanent exhibition. Photo date: June 29, 1927.
