Photograph caption dated November 26, 1953 reads, "They buttonhole Congressman Edgar W. Hiestand. Attorney Evelyn Whitlow, left, third vice president of BPW's, Mrs. William R. Towle, hostess; Hiestand and Nelle Powell, president of San Fernando Valley BPW's buttonhole the law-maker in the interests of Equal Rights Amendments. 'Operation Buttonhole' is a slogan adopted for the campaign. Nearly 165,000 members are urged to contact their representatives in an effort to get their votes for House Joint Resolution 74, the Equal Rights Amendment."
