Description
A woman attaches part of a headdress to the shaved head of a girl in the Maasai village in Tanzania. Maasai villagers shave their heads as a symbol of new beginning. It is usually done as a villager prepares for a ritual or rite of passage from one phase of life to another. It is customary for a woman to shave her head as she prepares to become a bride. The men may shave their heads as they prepare for circumcision. In 1979, Richard Cross was invited to photograph the Maasai people as part of an ethnographic film project by then doctoral student Peter Biella. Cross received the invitation while doing graduate work at Temple University in Philadelphia. While in Tanzania, Cross photographed the cultural traditions, tribal rituals and daily life of the Maasai people.
