Description
A family of four in their fashions for Philadelphia in 1837. The father wears gray trousers and a green frock coat fastened across the chest with military-style frogs and braiding. The coat has high lapels over a white ruffled collar, and black cravat or vest. The coat is snugly fitted over the body and quite full below the waist. He wears a gray top hat and gray and black shoes. Tugging on his arm is a young girl wearing a pink dress over white ruffled pantalettes. The dress has short sleeves edged with ruffles, a wide collar or fichu edged with ruffles, with two lappets loosely tied in back at the waist. She wears black boots with blue uppers. Her shoulder-length dark hair is dressed in curls hanging loose on her shoulders. The mother wears an ankle-length gray dress over white pantalettes. Her dress has a very full skirt, a tightly belted waist, and a pleated bodice with a white shawl collar covering her shoulders. The collar has embroidery and ruffled edges, and has a blue bow at the center front of the neckline. The sleeves of the dress are long and fitted to the wrists, but have double and triple layers of ruffles at the elbows and upper arms. She wears black and white button boots, a blue ruffled poke bonnet with flowers, and she carries a white handkerchief. Her dark hair is smoothed back, with groups of curls at the sides. She rests her hand on the shoulder of the older daughter who wears a white dress over white ruffled pantalettes. She wears a white fichu with a ruffled hem, worn crossed over in front. Her dress is tightly fitted, with a belt at the waist, and short sleeves with two ruffles. The skirt of her dress has either an apron or ruched bands creating the look of an apron, with two pockets trimmed with flowers. She wears black and blue buttoned boots. Her shoulder length dark curly hair is worn loose on her shoulders The family is shown in a well-appointed parlor, with large empire style furniture and ornaments.
