Description
The 24 Paragons of Filial Piety depict the self-sacrificing behavior of twenty-four sons and daughters who when to extreme lengths to honor their parents, stepparents, grandparents, and in-laws.The upper panel depicts Kan no Buntei, second emperor of the Han dynasty, who tasted his mother’s food to protect the queen dowager from poisoning. In the lower panel, two elegantly dressed kneeling women prepare food. The women on the left is scooping food into a decorated lacquered bowl. The woman on the right sits before a lacquered table, partially concealed by a paper screen, on which sits a plate with a fish draped across it. To her left, a blue china bowl sits on a black and red lacquered tray.
