Photograph caption dated April 29, 1963 reads, "Art Hortze, 21, North Hollywood, and Vito Mazzarino, 22, Van Nuys, left the Valley today on a trip which they hope will take them around the world - mainly by thumb. The former Valley college students were driven at 4 a.m. to Redlands where they were scheduled to begin hitchhiking to Panama where they hope to find work on an European-bound ship. The youths, both military veterans, took only $50 in cash with them. In their back packs, they carried some field boots, books and cooking equipment. They expect to be back in the Valley in about two years. In the meantime, they hope to learn something about the world."
