Description
Photo of the Hacienda. A house- and tree-lined dirt road at the foot of the hills leads through the village community to the Reduction Works, which can be seen in the distance. Photo is mounted on red board by four corner mounts. Typewritten label below photo: "The Hacienda in the 1870's." On back of photo: Handwritten in ink: "The Hacienda and Reduction Works, 1870's. Please credit New Almaden Historical Society." The Hacienda was the headquarters for the mining company, situated at the base of the hills, serving as a terminal for the general operations of the mines and the reduction of ore at the furnaces. It was referred to as the Hacienda de Beneficio, or the Reduction Works, and was commonly known as the Hacienda as the settlement grew (Lanyon & Bulmore, 91). Mostly salaried and white-collar workers lived in the Hacienda, with the miners living in primarily either Englishtown or Spanishtown on the Hill (Schneider, 20).
