Description
One of the many labels to feature Lick Observatory, this is a crate label for a 46 pound crate of McCurdy California Pears. In the 1930s Santa Clara County was the pear growing center of California and pears were the county's third largest crop. The label features a silhouette of Lick Observatory. Lick Obeservatory has been an iconic symbol of San Jose since it was built on Mount Hamilton in the 1880s. The observatory is owned and operated by the University of California and is one of the most productive research observatories in the world. Fruits were often displayed in their crates in grocery stores and markets, so crate labels were designed to stand out and appeal to the customer's eye.
