The John Tracy Clinic was founded in 1942 by Louise Tracy, wife of actor Spencer Tracy. In 1925, the couple's son John was diagnosed with profound hearing loss at 10 months old. Mrs. Tracy worked with him and taught him lip-reading and encouraged him to learn how to speak. She opposed sign language. The clinic established programs to educate and offer emotional support to parents and their preschool deaf youngsters, free of charge. The clinic has locations in Los Angeles and Long Beach, and offers online services to families. The clinic's first home in Los Angeles was at 924 W. 37th Street and was later moved to 806 W. Adams Boulevard. Photograph caption dated November 13, 1957 reads "Little Bruce Weatherly, who is deaf, 'listens' with his eyes at John Tracy Clinic, while Bob Ruff, president of California State Junior Chamber of Commerce, left, and Chuck Hurly, national director, tell Mrs. Spencer Tracy, clinic founder, of Jaycee endorsement of clinic."
