Looking towards Sacramento from the west; river in foreground, sailing ships anchored along shore; buildings visible along bank. Signed by artist "Geo. A. Frost."

Painting is based on a pencil drawing by George Holbrook Baker. In July 1849, Benjamin T. Martin was living in Sacramento. He had George Baker, an artist who was stopping with him, draw a pencil sketch of the city. Mr. Martin returned to his native state (Chelsea, Mass.) and years later had Geo. A. Frost, an artist of Cambridge, Mass. make the oil painting from the sketch.
