Description
Pomo women dance the Bole Maru of today, nearly a century after it first evolved, blending the native Kuksu cult with the Maru, or dream religion. The five dances reflect recent influences including Christianity and World War II: Chosho wya ko'o (hand power dance), Ka'mots pilili ko'o (star hoop dance), Lame'sa ko'o (attendants' or feast dance), Ayayo kata ko'o (marriage dance), and Ho'dobiy wantera ko'o (war flag dance). Each is performed in elaborate dress around a fire within a brush enclosure. The shaman expresses her religious beliefs in her own words. Ceremonial activities and the termination feast are interwoven with the dances and occasional ethnological commentary. Photographed with synchronous sound near Stewart's Point, California with the cooperation of the Southwestern Pomo Community, Kashia Reservation, June 18, 1961.
