Description
Charles Handy article concerning changes in technology and social structure, and their effects on work. Handy argues that the shape work can take is decided by available technology, adjusted to the social structure of time, and then fitted into prevailing values. He proceeds to trace the idea of work through much of European and religious history, specifically Judeo-Christian principles, and comes to the conclusion that in contemporary society, work is a commodity. Handy then suggests that work should no longer be a commodity, that it should be reshaped to fit better with the true nature of man, which necessitates taking account of moral as well as economic values.
