Photograph was edited for publication purposes This Chevrolet assembly plant opened in 1947 and produced the Chevrolet Corvair, Chevrolet Nova, Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet full-size models and the Pontiac Firebird. The plant was closed in 1992 after the production of Camaro and Firebird vehicles was moved to Sainte-The´re`se Assembly in Quebec. In 1998, the facility was razed and replaced with a large retail and industrial complex, known as The Plant. GM continues to operate a car-testing facility nearby. Photograph caption dated March 4, 1950 reads, "The chassis has been assembled and is ready to receive motor, and next step is to attach wheels and begin to roll." Seen in the photograph are just a few of the 1700 employees at the Chevrolet assembly plant in Van Nuys that produce over 300 vehicles in an eight-hour day, roughly 42 passenger cars and 15 trucks per hour.; See images #00124050 through #00124056 for all photos in this series.
