Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph caption dated October 2, 1963 reads, "Red Cross nurse Jeri Phillips takes a blood sample from Salvation Army Capt. Frank Brown while Brigadier Winfred Roswall awaits his turn. The donated blood will go to a Chicago girl, granddaughter of an Army employe [sic] in Van Nuys, who faces open heart surgery." The article partially reads, "When Brigadier Winfred Roswall...heard of the impending surgery and the need for blood, he organized employes [sic] and men in the Salvation Army's rehabilitation program and various Army officials...The donors gathered Tuesday at Red Cross headquarters in Van Nuys to contribute blood for the girl's surgery."
