Black and white lantern slide featuring smoke rising from buildings during the 'burning of Hankow' in November 1911. Figures can be seen walking in the foreground. Hankou was attacked by Qing troops attempting to suppress the anti-Imperial rebellion that began in nearby Wuchang, resulting in the burning of the city. International press reported looting and atrocities that took place inside the city, including of attacks on some foreign mission buildings. This image was probably not taken by Somerville, since a copy is also held by the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries. This slide comes from a collection held by the Church of Scotland and generated by the medical missionary Charles Somerville, who worked for the London Missionary Society in Hankou from 1904 to 1914.
