Description
Photograph of a view of a section of Nevada City's Chinatown, ca.1900. A gambling house stands on the corner of the street on the right with crumbling brick walls and drawn curtains that would shade the display windows of the front entrance. Jackson's Grocery stands in a lightly-colored building to the right with dark shutters on the three upper windows and a dark entrance with a smaller sign below. Other lightly-colored buildings can be seen further down the street to the right while Complete Home Furnishers stands in the foreground on the right, across the street from the others. A porch extends over the side walk in front and a small, wooden chair can be seen in the glass display window at the corner. Picture file card reads "All three of these buildings show the iron shutters of the 1850-1860 period. The left building was a gambling house upstairs and saloon below, with a 'ladies entrance' up the street. The old sign painted on the brick is still there. Next is Jackson's Grocery -- on the right is the Masonic Hall. This was a section of Nevada City's Chinatown".
