Description
This photo that appeared in the Sacramento Bee on Feb. 22, 1980, is of the front page of the Sacramento Bee for the September 19, 1922 evening edition. The caption of both the original photo and its republication are substantially similar with the latter stating: "Photo was taken September 18, 1922 at the Kennedy Mine while rescue crews were searching the lower levels of the Argonaut mine for 47 entombed miners. At upper left is a view of the hoist. At upper right is another view taken at the surface workings. At lower left are two members of the rescue crew: John Hay is left and Dan McCarty is right. At lower right is a view of a skip at the Kennedy Mine about to descend."
