Description
Female workers canning fruit. This image shows the beginnings of mechanization in the factory. The women are working with the fruit by hand, with crates of cans below or next to their workstations. Filled cans are carried out of the work area on a small conveyor belt. This image was featured in the book, "Italy in Hollywood" (2018) on page 32 with the caption: Italian workers employed in canning fruit at the California Fruit Canners Association (later Del Monte Foods) founded by Marco Giovanni Fontana for conserving and selling canned foods.
