Description
An older woman with shaved eyebrows, indicating her married status, is nicely but conservatively dressed. Her plaid inner robe is typical of late Edo Period fashions in the city of Edo, often influenced by kabuki stage costume textiles. She might be a merchant's wife returning from a day at the theater. In the panel above are 3 itinerant musicians, a reclining dog, a noodle stand, and a bamboo palanquin with 2 bearers / yotsude kago, all set against an evening's mist through which a crescent moon peeks. This image has an "end-of-an-era" quality about it, which may reflect on Chikanobu's attitudes toward the last years of the shogunate and of "old Japan."
