Description
This interview was conducted as part of the North San Rafael History Project: From Ranches to Ranch Houses: The Growth of San Rafael’s Miller Creek & Las Gallinas Valleys, a collaboration of citizens in North San Rafael and the Anne T. Kent California Room, Marin County Free Library. Interviews were conducted with North San Rafael leaders & pioneers to document the history of the area since World War II, including citizen involvement to protect the quality of life and preserve the unique character and natural assets of the area.
The native Californian recalls his family’s history in Marin, particularly regarding Smith Ranch acquired on the courthouse steps in 1920/1. Mr. Smith gives details about Ranch activities, from operating a large dairy, to farming and cattle raising, to building a runway in a hayfield which evolved into a small airport. He reflects on the demise of the Ranch’s agricultural legacy as the lands were slowly sold for home and commercial development.
