Tiffani Righero Collection A legendary figure known as the dean of lifeguards in Santa Monica Bay Area, George Watkins' many accomplishments include the founding of the Santa Monica Lifeguard Service in 1932 and the pioneering use of rubber tubes and paddle boards in water rescues. After 50 years of service, Watkins retired in 1955 at the age of 70. He died in 1966.
