Between 1858 and 1861 Julius Bien (1826-1909) printed his best known work, a color-lithographed edition of 105 “double elephant folio” plates from John James Audubon’s The Birds of America printed between 1827 and 1838.
Bien adapted his version of Audubon's White-headed Eagle for this separate print, adding flags, military accouterments and a Union shield to represent the threat to the Constitution caused by the Civil War.
