Photograph caption date stamped May 18, 1963 partially reads, "Notre Dame pitcher John Herbst, the most-sought-after prep baseball player in California, can thank a small group of angry neighbors for his introduction to baseball at the tender age of six. 'I had a terrific urge to throw things when I was younger,' explained Herbst, 'and they usually wound up going through someone's window. My parents suggested I put my arm to good use and try the next best thing - baseball.'" Photograph caption reads, "John Herbst kicks high before delivery - Notre Dame hurler has a perfect 13-0 record." Photograph also used caption date stamped January 28, 1965. Photograph caption reads, "Valley southpaws to bolster USC's pitching."
