Dr. S.I. Hayakawa, left, faces up to a militant student just after tearing the wiring loose from sound truck speakers after the vehicle had been driven on campus against his orders. The incident took place during a student strike organized to gain 15 demands, including an Ethnic Studies program (created later that year) at San Francisco State University. Hayakawa was an English professor at SFS from 1955 to 1968, President from 1968 to 1973, President Emeritus from 1973-1977, and a California Senator from 1977 to 1983.
