Description
260 East Blithedale Photo shows a brown shingled, white trimmed church building taken from the side street (Sycamore) and through overhanging trees. Three white trimmed "church style" double hung windows are visible on the front under the high pitched gable. There is another tall gable facing the side street with the matching three windows. The caption from the 1983 Walk into History reads, "Before we walk down Sycamore, we should mention the church which as been at this corner since 1913 and which is little changed from its original brown shingle Gothic Revival appearance. It is now the Marin Christian Center, but until 1959 it was the United Methodist Church. Mr. William Abbott came to Mill Valley in 1906 and dwas influenti8al in bringing visiting ministers to hold church services and to establish the congregation. Services were held at the Outdoor Art Club, the IOOF (Odd Fellows) Hall , and the Masonic Hall until 1909 when two lots were purchased from Fred Bagshow and a tent was erected. By 1913 sufficient funds had been raised to build the church. In 1940 the hall adjoining the church was added and was used for a time by the Mill Valley School District when the increased population of World War II created a classroom shortage."
