Description
Mayan children sit under an improvised tent made of wood and plastic in the refugee camp of La Sombra, Chiapas. One boy sits next to a camp fire set up for cooking and one girl smiles looking at the camera. Refugees in the camps had no resources to deal with illness such as tubercolosis, dengue, malaria or malnutrition. Guatemala paramilitary bands attacked the refugees camp of La Sombra (and the one of Santiago el Vértice) on January 25 and 26, 1983, killing at least four people and kidnapping one. The Guatemalan government alleged that the refugee camp was a guerrilla center but the vast majority of the refugees living in the camp were women, children or old and infirm Guatemalans.
