Description
Dodger Stadium in the Los Angeles area of Chavez Ravine, just north of downtown, is currently the third oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball. Construction began in 1959, it opened on April 10, 1962, and has been home to the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team ever since. It was designed by architect Emil Praeger and was built by the Vinell Construction Company. The stadium sits on 300 acres and has a capacity of 56,000, with 16,000 parking spaces. The stadium was privately financed by Walter O'Malley with an original proposed cost of $12 million but was finally completed at a cost of $23 million. Dodger Stadium's official address is 1000 Elysian Park Avenue.
Photograph caption dated April 11, 1962 reads, "The one they waited for - Cincinnati's Vada Pinson and Frank Robinson chase Ron Fairly's double (left) as Jim Gilliam rounds third base in the fourth inning on his way to scoring the Dodgers' first run in their new baseball park which opened yesterday."
