Description
Title supplied by cataloger.; Image is a reproduction. Esther Tarica Altabet was born in 1910 on the island of Rhodes, Turkey (now Greece). This was the same year her parents, Marco and Rachel Tarica, immigrated to America with Esther and her brother. They came directly to Los Angeles via New York for better job opportunities. The family remembers that the Sephardic Jewish community was clustered in downtown L.A. but expanded throughout Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley following World War II. Esther married Mordo Ben Altabet in 1928 and had six children. She died September 2001 at the age of 90.; The Wilshire Bowl opened in 1933 and around 1942-1943 it became The Louisiana. Slapsy Maxie's existed in the space from 1943-1947 and was one of the venues that gave Danny Thomas his earliest stand-up performance opportunities. Eventually, Van de Kamp's Bakeries signed a $1,000,000 lease with Prudential Insurance Co. to convert the former restaurant into a modern coffee shop in 1952. It was demolished in 1982 to make way for a large commercial development. Souvenir photograph of Esther and Mordo Altabet taken at Slapsy Maxie's nightclub circa 1945. See Image 00080818 for an additional photo in this series.
