Description
This Nov. 22, 1935, photograph captures the hurly-burly of Sacramento's L Street Arena. The evening included a headline exhibition by heavyweight champion James Braddock and sparring partner Jack McCarthy. Sacramento resident and former champion Max Baer didn't participate, but enlivened the partisan and overflow crowd with his ringside antics and a "mighty fine little speech in which he demonstrated fragments of wisdom and sportsmanship in lauding the man who took the title from him," said the Nov. 23, 1935, Sacramento Bee.
