Article by Charles Handy on the LIFT (London International Festival of Theatre) experience and what corporate executives learned from exposure to its range of events. Handy notes that if only more businesses had LIFT organizers’ infectious enthusiasm, alongside their talent for understated management, the economy would be very different today from what it is. He proceeds to discuss a LIFT experiment in which business executives were instructed to attend a range of Business Arts Forums in different countries in order to gain exposure to differing corporate cultures, which was a success for the executives. Handy then lists what the executives learned from their exposure in foreign territories, and concludes that management suffers from too much rationality and the familiar course of operations, in addition to too much emphasis on tidy operations and the belief that additional revenue rectifies all problems or issues that may arise in an organization. The LIFT program provides one way to challenge that business-as-usual approach.
