Description
Photograph of an exterior view of the adobe home of Sheriff Don Thomas Sanchez, Glendale, ca.1920. The one-story rancher-style home is pictured beyond its lawn at center, obscured by several trees. A line of four adjacent windows are visible in the front to the left, while the porch, which is adorned by a trellis, can be seen to the right. A large portion of the roof shingles to the right have been stripped and lie on the ground in front of the porch. A chain link fence can be seen to the extreme left along the edge of the property, beyond which mountain ridges can be seen. A water tower is partially visible behind a tree in the background to the far right. The adobe home, built from 1872-1875, features wood paneling and was located in San Rafael Park on the back of the Verdugo Ranch one-half mile west of Brand Boulevard on Dorothy Drive. Sanchez was the first sheriff in Los Angeles County. His wife was Dona Rafaela, a granddaughter of grantee to the Rancho San Rafael.
