Photograph was edited for publication purposes Havilah is an unincorporated community located in Kern County south of Bodfish. It was named after the Biblical land of Havilah, "where there is gold." Havilah acted as county seat at the founding of Kern County in 1866 until the county goverment was moved to Bakersfield in 1874. Havilah is listed as California Historical Landmark no. 100. Photograph caption dated December 3, 1956 partially reads, "Havilah...founded in 1863 as Kern County's seat during gold rush, remains today as few stone buildings high on mountain south of Bodfish, on Highway 178, about 50 miles northeast of Bakersfield.
