In 1955, actress Jane Russell founded the World Adoption International Fund, sometimes locally referred to as the Women's Adoption International Fund. WAIF was a volunteer organization designed to help facilitate overseas adoptions by American couples. Russell adopted three children with husband Bob Waterfield and her career was nearly ended because of one of the adoptions. Photograph caption dated November 3, 1964 reads "Valley members of WAIF make plans to attend annual ball. From left are Mmes. Gordon Forbes, Encino; Norman Rehm, North Hollywood; Richard Wray and Lorne Greene, Sherman Oaks. The international ball will honor the country of Ireland."
