Description
Archbishop Arturo Rivera y Damas walks up the stairs of the Cathedral of San Salvador to celebrate mass on the third anniversary of the assassination of Archbishop Óscar Arnulfo Romero during Palm Sunday celebrations. He holds palm fronds in his hands and is accompanied by a priest and two altar boys. In the background of the image there is a large crowd of people watching the day's events. Romero was shot as he celebrated mass in a hospital chapel on March 24, 1980. Pope Francis canonized Romero, now Saint Óscar Romero, in 2018. The United Nations-led Truth Commission investigation concluded in 1983 that Roberto d'Aubuisson, a right wing politician that set up anti-communist death squad in El Salvador, was responsible for the murder of Romero but he was never brought to justice. Richard Cross took this image in 1982 while covering the presidential election and War of Liberation in El Salvador.
